Call for Sessions

Submissions are now invited for proposed sessions. We welcome session proposals, which must be linked to the conference theme, from any field of archaeological inquiry, including Indigenous archaeology, historical archaeology, cultural heritage management, rock art studies, maritime archaeology, archaeological science, and public archaeology. We particularly encourage sessions that seek presentations that range across the archeology discipline, especially sessions that will allow presentations that address archaeology on both land and underwater.

Session organisers should provide a title and abstract (up to 200 words) for the proposed session and select the session format, which will run for 2 hours:

  • Standard Session – 6 presentations of 20 minutes each (including Q&A). Please provide an estimate of the number of standard sessions requested.
  • Lightning Round – 10 presentations of 10 mins each, followed by 20 minutes for Q&A or general discussion. Lightning round sessions were specifically requested by AAA2023 delegates to ensure no more than three concurrent sessions. These short papers are particularly well suited to the presentation of preliminary results, scientific analyses, heritage management projects, and sessions incorporating multiple presentations on the same overarching research project. Please provide an estimate of the number of lightning round sessions requested..
  • Workshop or Panel – may follow a range of formats and would be particularly suited to discussions of specific theme-related issues or methodologies. Please include principal aims in your abstract, and advise potential number of speakers, and any restrictions on numbers of participants.

Although we are not yet calling for paper abstracts and are only requesting session proposals, we remind session proposers that paper presenters may only present one oral paper during the conference, though they may be co-authors on other papers. This applies to panellists and workshop convenors. The lead session organiser and lead paper presenter must be AAA or AIMA members, and all session organisers and presenters must be registered to attend the conference by 1 September 2025. To limit the number of parallel sessions, the conference committee will combine similar themes where necessary while striving to achieve the widest possible diversity of session topics under the umbrella of the conference theme.

Session abstracts are due by 7 May 2025.

We will announce the conference sessions that have been accepted on 16 May and issue a Call for Paper and Poster Abstracts on 26 May. Conference registrations will open on 26 May.

Presentation Protocol

AAA Code of Ethics
Session organisers, presenters and delegates are reminded of the Association’s Code of Ethics regarding protocols for the presentation of any data and/or interpretations of data that relate to Indigenous culture. These protocols require all session organisers and presenters to ensure that full prior and informed consent to collect, record, and present data and interpretations relating to Indigenous cultural materials is obtained from Indigenous collaborators and/or owners of data before any paper is accepted into a session and subsequently presented at the conference, as either a spoken paper, workshop, panel or poster. We take this opportunity to reiterate that breaches of the Association’s Code of Ethics can result in the expulsion of members under section 32 of the Constitution.

AAA Code of Conduct
Within the submission process you will be asked to agree to abide by the AAA Code of Conduct. Anyone whose behaviour does not meet the Association’s Code of Conduct may be asked to leave the conference.
