National First Nations Heritage Legislation:
Briefing on Progress to Date by DCCEEW<\/h3>\n
AAA had organised for a briefing from the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (Heritage Policy Branch, Heritage Division) (the Department) regarding the national cultural heritage legislative review. Unfortunately DCCEEW is no longer able to meet this commitment.<\/p>\n
The Government has been working in partnership with the First Nations Heritage Protection Alliance (the Alliance), to co-design reforms aimed at strengthening protections of First Nations cultural heritage. DCCEEW commenced targeted consultations in March 2024 to hear from jurisdictions and peak bodies about their concerns and priorities in relation to First Nations cultural heritage and to lay the groundwork for future consultations on the detail of the proposed reforms. We had hoped to hear an update on progress from DCCEEW staff.<\/p>\n
AAA has arranged an alternative Workshop on national heritage legislation.
Joe Dortch, Jo Thomson, Caroline Spry, Rosalie Neve and Peter Veth have agreed to provide an overview of what is needed in new national Indigenous heritage legislation, from a range of perspectives (including heritage management in practice; Indigenous worldviews; academic considerations). Attendees will have the opportunity to share additional information, especially from practitioners and First Nations delegates with specific knowledge about Australia\u2019s current heritage laws. The Workshop will provide an opportunity for delegates to advise the AAA NEC on what steps the Association could take next in this process.<\/p>\n
